Don't dare to compare
Dear Sam: How do I stop comparing myself to other girls at my high school? It makes me feel so bad about myself.
Jennifer
Dear Jennifer:
You may not believe this, but almost every teenage girl feels the same
way you do! It doesn’t matter how rich, beautiful, or talented someone
is, there will always be opportunity to feel bad when we go down the
road of comparing. I think these three steps will help you have a
healthier self-image.
- Understand that you are a work in progress.
God is writing the pages of your life and even if you don’t like how
the current chapter looks, know that He’s not finished! Your body
shape, personality, and abilities are exactly the right design to have
a happy ending.
- Exchange your criticism for congratulations.
List 5 things that you are good at or that you like about yourself. Do
this every time those negative thoughts try to bring you down!
- Believe what God says about you.
If you change what you believe, you will change how you feel. Start
believing what God says about you over what others say or what you say
about yourself. Here’s two things God says about you.
Jeremiah
29:11 For I know the thoughts I think towards you says the Lord,
thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Psalm 139:13, 14 I formed you in your mothers womb, you are fearfully and wonderfully made.
I believe what God says about you!
Sam
