My best friend moved away

Dear Sam: My best friend Steph moved away to North Bay, Ontario last summer. I'm a quiet girl and I dont have any friends at school since she left. What can I do?

Holly

Hi Holly: I’m sorry to hear that your best friend moved away. That must have been very difficult for you and Steph. But the good news is, girls are always looking for friends! I’m sure there are some in your school, church or neighborhood! Here’s how to find them.
  1. Start a friendship by being available to girls with the same interests. For example, if you’re on a team, or in the band at school, say to a perspective friend, “we should get together sometime.” Follow-up with a phone call. Or see if your mom could pick her up or drive her home after practice. In the car, start some small talk. Before I meet someone for the first time, I usually think ahead about questions to ask them. Did you have a recent test? You could ask her how she did. Just be sincere.
  2. Being generous is another good way to start a friendship. Pack an extra chocolate bar in your lunch to share, or remember someone’s birthday with a card. These are great ways to start friendships. Your mom could probably help you with some ideas.
The best way to make and keep a friend is to be one. I’m sure there are some great friends, as quiet as you, just waiting for someone to say “hi”. You’ll be glad you did!
