How do I rediscover God?
Dear Sam: Sam… I'm not really sure
where to start, but I just sorta needed someone to talk to. I guess
what I wanted to ask is how do I rediscover God after struggling for so
long. In the past couple of years I've engaged in a lot of self
destructive behaviour. Drugs and alcohol, and letting guys use me for
sex has left me feeling pretty depressed about my life. I used to be
happy, I had goals, and I wanted to do something with my life. Now I
feel helpless...like I've gone too far. I want religion to be back in
my life, but I have NO idea where to start!
Kate
Dear Kate: Sometimes we walk away from God, but God has never walked away from us!
Hebrews 13:5 “I will never leave you or forsake you.” There is no such thing as “too far” where God is concerned!
Romans
8:38 For death nor life, angels or principalities, nor things present
or things to come, neither height or depth or any created thing can
separate us from the love God has for us.
Here’s how to
re-connect with God, and believe me, He gives second chances (even if
it’s the 100th second chance!). It’s this simple!
- Admit to God you’ve made some mistakes. 1 John 1:9 if we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- Make a commitment to begin making right choices. Romans 12:1 present your body as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.
- Believe that God has given you a fresh start. 2 Corinthians 5:17 if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature, old things are passed away and all things are become new.
Now, Kate, get yourself a Bible and a devotional book. A local
Christian bookstore will have plenty of choices, but I recommend an NIV
Students Bible and “Devotions for Teens” by Susie Shellenberger. As you
read and pray, your connection to God will get stronger. You should
also get involved in a local church youth group. Having friends that
are making the same choices you are will keep you connected to God.
I’m confident that you’ll soon have a new outlook on life!
Sam
PS: Thanks for writing.
