Mean Girls... What's Your Friendship Like?
There’s a difference in the way guys and girls handle their friendships. With guys, stuff tends to blow up, and then blow over. When it’s done, it’s done and they’re right back there being buds. That’s how guys are wired. We girls are more...complex. We’re more socially conscious, I mean we can be downright obsessive about being in on the popular scene. That’s when girl-to-girl mean stuff can happen. Girls hurt with words: back –stabbing through gossip, anonymous e-mails and notes, and there’s name calling by girls ‘in packs’. When girls get together, meanness can escalate.
All this junk comes out in a girl’s behaviour, because inside she has a mega hurt called insecurity. A teenage girl absolutely can not stand feeling rejected. Because of that she may make a choice to hurt other girls. For a tiny while, that seems to medicate her pain.
You know what’s amazing is that the Bible talks about this kind of mean girl stuff. In Psalm 69 someone tells what it feels like to be on the receiving end of it:
“I’m broken by their taunts,
Flat on my face, reduced to nothing.
I looked in vain for one friendly face.
Not one.” Ps. 69:20 The Message
Flat on my face, reduced to nothing.
I looked in vain for one friendly face.
Not one.” Ps. 69:20 The Message
Do you know who wept out those words? The person was Jesus Christ, the Son of God! Mean behavior has a very deadening affect, breaking a person’s heart – and if it can do that to the Son of God, it can certainly do that to you – or to another girl in your school.
Know what? Every girl has a choice – behavior is always a choice! Choosing to be underhanded and secretive toward another girl whether she’s a fellow student or your own sister, is wrong.
When I sow into my life great and noble and beautiful actions, that’s what I will become …. a woman who has become great and noble and beautiful, who other women admire and emulate.
And, it’s when I get centred with God that the mega hurt of insecurity begins to heal …. And my intimidation gets replaced with a new identity and confidence that comes from Him. I love that.
